NOVAC 11: mobile IOeRT accelerator

NOVAC11 is the descendant of NOVAC 7, the first IOeRT mobile electron linear accelerator designed worldwide in 1997. NOVAC 11 is a very solid technology which performed thousands of IOeRT treatments worldwide. The basic architecture of NOVAC7 has been updated in order to reach 10 MeV;  furthermore, the Human Machine Interface (HMI) has been entirely updated in order to meet the technical standard requirements.

It is therefore the first example of a radiotherapy device which is flexible and easy to use, powerful and safe. It is able to perform the IOeRT treatment in only 100 seconds. NOVAC 11 ensures proper coverage of any anatomic region where the IOeRT treatment needs to bedelivered . By selecting the correct applicator/energy combination, it is possible to treat any neoplastic disease effectively and safely. NOVAC 11 maximum energy is 10 MeV which allows treating targets with a thickness up to 2.6 cm inside the 90% isodose (3.0 cm inside the 80% isodose).

FLEXIBLE & EASY TO USE

  • THE HAND PENDANT: it is equipped with a bar code reading system used to recognize the selected applicator
  • LIGHT WEIGHT OF MOBILE UNIT: the impact in the operating room is minimal, and no structural changes are necessary.
  • TRANSPORT INTO STRETCHER ELEVATOR: NOVAC 11 can be easily transported to the operating room through the use of any stretcher elevator.
  • FUNCTIONALITY IN MULTIPLE OPERATING ROOMS: the system can be quickly moved via the dedicated hand pendant and utilized in any operating room, thus maximizing its employment.

NOVAC11 CONNECTIVITY TO THE HOSPITAL NETWORK

allows to relocate the treatment database in a centralized repository, making it available for authorized medical personnel and/or usable to schedule in advance an IOeRT treatment in order to minimize the operations to be performed in the operating room;- enables to execute remote diagnostics which permits to planning the technical support service in the most efficient way.

FAST COMMISSIONING

NOVAC 11 commissioning is performed in accordance with primary international protocols through the use of standard dosimetric instrumentation, as well as use of the Monte Carlo Simulation proprietary software.

The use of the Monte Carlo software allows to dramatically reduce (3 working days) the dosimetric characterization of the accelerator already during its acceptance test performed at the main factory.

PLUG & PLAY INSTALLATION

NOVAC 11 is a plug & play device.

It is not necessary to conduct any upgrading in operating rooms.

It is sufficient to connect the mobile unit and the control unit by a dedicated cable.

The NOVAC 11 installation only requires availability of:

  • – 16 A electrical socket (230 Vac 50Hz 1 phase; 230 Vac 50/60Hz 1 phase);
  • – acoustic and optical signaling system where required.

APPLICATORS

NOVAC11 collimates the dose to the target through applicators made of medical grade PMMA. This solution allows a very high surface dose especially designed to treat targets that are surgically exposed. Experimental data also showed PMMA is the best available material to limit any stray radiation coming from beam-applicator interaction.

– Standard supplied applicators diameters are: 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120 mm

– Applicators available bevel angles are: 0°, 15°, 22.5°, 30° and 45° offering both circular and elliptical fields.

The applicator is made of two parts that are mechanical joined during the hard-docking phase by means of a special locking ring.

RADIOPROTECTION DISCS

In breast cancer treatment, the use of a radioprotection disc temporarily inserted between the target and the chest wall fully protects the healthy tissue underneath.

The disc is a medical device made of steel and Tecapeek® (Polyetheretherketone), biocompatible and and made of sterilizable materialavailable in the following diameters: 50, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and100 mm.

RADIOPROTECTION PERFORMANCE

NOVAC 11 radiation protection performances are <0.3µSv/Gy at 3m distance in patient level. A high workload is always possible within any floor thanks to the modular horizontal shield, the beam absorber which is positioned under the operating table.
